Meta Removes 63,000 Instagram Accounts in Nigeria for Sextortion Scams

Meta’s Crackdown on Sextortion Scams

Meta Platforms has announced the removal of approximately 63,000 Instagram accounts in Nigeria linked to financial sexual extortion scams, a significant move aimed at curbing “sextortion” activities. The company also deleted 7,200 Facebook accounts, pages, and groups related to scamming operations.

Understanding Sextortion and Online Fraud

“Sextortion” involves threatening individuals with the release of compromising photos, either real or fabricated, unless they pay to prevent it. This type of scam primarily targets adult men in the United States, although there have also been attempts to extort minors. The scammers, often referred to as “Yahoo boys,” are known for various online fraud tactics, including impersonating individuals in financial distress or pretending to be Nigerian royalty offering lucrative investments.

Meta’s Efforts to Combat Online Scams

The recent crackdown by Meta targeted a large network of Instagram accounts used to perpetuate these scams. The removed accounts were part of a broader operation involving a smaller coordinated network of around 2,500 accounts linked to a group of approximately 20 individuals. This network used fake profiles to conceal their identities and target victims primarily in the US.

Meta’s investigation revealed that while many of these extortion attempts were unsuccessful, some efforts also targeted minors, leading to reports being sent to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children in the US. The company employed advanced technical signals to identify and address sextortion activities effectively.

The Rise of Scams in Nigeria

The rise in online scams from Nigeria, often referred to as “419 scams” after the relevant section of the Nigerian penal code, has been fueled by economic challenges in the country. Scammers operate from various environments, including university dormitories and affluent neighborhoods. Some of the removed accounts were found to be selling scripts and guides for conducting scams, as well as sharing links to collections of photos used in fake profiles.

Meta’s Ongoing Commitment to Safety

Meta’s actions highlight its commitment to combating online scams and protecting users from financial and emotional harm. By addressing these sextortion networks and their support infrastructure, Meta aims to create a safer online environment for its global user base.
